What you need to know
- Google's Pixel 4a may go on sale this July.
- This report comes from French retailers who have listed the upcoming phone with pricing and a launch date.
- The Pixel was earlier reported to be scheduled for an October release.
Google's upcoming Pixel 4a has been listed by French retailers this week, complete with pricing and launch date details. From the listings, buyers may expect to shell out about €509.56 (573.01 with a 20% sales tax inclusive) for the 4a as per the retailer Ordimedia and €441.65 from eStock.Fr, with choices of either blue and black and a single storage option of 128GB. Both retailers give a street date as early July, with the former specifically listing July 7th, with the latter uses a vaguer time frame of 8-12 working days (which works at about the same time in any case.)
The Pixel 4a had previously been expected to launch in May, and then later in June. Newer reports had moved the release date to as late as October, with yet other sources saying that it'd be here "very soon."
The 4a is one of Google's most leaked Pixels, even for an especially leaky line. We've gotten a look at the handset's design, seen it benchmarked, and seen the camera reviewed. At a rumored launch price of $350, it looks like a phone that would be worth watching in 2020. But Google only has a small window before other similarly priced and much more powerful phones make their debut.
Samsung's Galaxy A71 for example will come to the U.S. this summer with a Snapdragon 765G chip. The Nokia 8.3 will also bring stock Android and 5G for a slightly higher price than the Pixel, not to mention the rumored OnePlus Z. In the UK and Europe, affordable phones from Xiaomi and Motorola will offer more obvious value for the casual browser.
We'll have to see for ourselves how the Pixel 4a stacks up to these phones, but a later release date lowers rather than raises the odds of a Pixel renaissance that Google needs to reverse the downwards sales slope.
